Case study: FTM Garments ERP

A walkthrough of the most complex system I've built — from problem to production.

The Problem

Manual processes were costing time and money

FTM Garments was running inventory, HR, and operations on spreadsheets and paper. Data was siloed, errors were frequent, and getting a business overview meant hours of manual consolidation. With 300+ staff across production, HR, and management, the cracks were showing.

My Approach

Architect first, then build incrementally

I started with stakeholder interviews to map every workflow before writing a line of code. I chose a modular architecture — inventory, HR, clinic, and reporting as separate modules sharing a single PostgreSQL database — so each could be delivered and adopted independently without disrupting operations.

Key Technical Decisions

NestJS + Next.js + PostgreSQL on AWS

NestJS for a structured, testable API layer. Next.js for a fast server-rendered frontend usable on any device. PostgreSQL for relational integrity. AWS for reliable hosting with automated backups — cutting data-loss risk by 90%.

The Challenge

User adoption in a non-technical environment

The hardest part wasn't the code — it was getting a workforce used to paper to trust a new system. I ran phased UAT sessions, wrote plain-language documentation, and did hands-on training. Adoption was at 80%+ within the first month.
